About Us
CTGROUP operates like a company within a company, or as we usually refer to it, a division of Commercial Travelers Mutual Insurance Company. Commercial Travelers was founded in Utica, New York, in 1883 by Mr. Edward Trevvett. Edward Trevvett, a British-born tea salesman and traveling sales representative (or 'commercial travelers', as they were then known), had a difficult time obtaining insurance because the travel portion of his livelihood was considered to be an unusual risk. With this very notion, Edward Trevvett and his associates founded the company as a mutual accident association that insured 'commercial travelers'. Commercial Travelers was one of the first insurance companies in the nation to sell insurance by utilizing direct response methods. Over the years, Commercial Travelers has expanded and diversified. In the early 1990s, Commercial Travelers developed CTGROUP to specialize in employers' needs for Group Life and Disability income protection. CTGROUP has grown and has become well established in its years of operation. CTGROUP has inherited and maintained the same integrity and values that were established when Commercial Travelers Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1883. In 1905, Commercial Travelers Mutual Insurance Company moved to a building at 70 Genesee Street in downtown Utica, New York. The building is located within the sight of the Erie Canal, and is in one of the busiest commerce districts of Utica. Today, the building still stands and remains the Home Office for Commercial Travelers Mutual Insurance Company. |
